HEARTSTART
Here at CHMAS, we firmly believe that everyone should have the chance to learn valuable life saving skills and we are pleased to be accredited to run the Heathstart scheme through the British Heart Foundation (BHF)
The Heartstart courses are provided free of charge and typically last for two to three hours. You will be provided with 'hands on' practical training to deal with:
Completion of the course will give you the simple skills needed in a life threatening emergency that could help you to save the life of someone you love. Also, if you can do CPR, then it more than doubles the chances of survival for someone who has a cardiac arrest.
To date over 3.5 million people have received this training so come along and join them.

DofE FIRST AID
If you have a group undertaking a DofE expedition, the Expedition Training Framework requires the participants to have appropriate knowledge of First Aid for the environment they will be travelling in. Chmas has developed a bespoke first aid course that will make sure your group will know what to do in an emergency.
Content
Current guidance from the Expedition Frameworks (Oct 2015) recommends that participants have received training in the following:
- Action in an emergency - resuscitation, airway, breathing
and circulation; - Recognition and treatment of hypothermia and heatstroke;
- The treatment of wounds and bleeding;
- Treatment for shock;
- The treatment of blisters, cuts, abrasions, minor burns and
scalds, headaches, insect bites, sunburn, splinters; - The recognition of more serious conditions such as sprains,
strains, dislocations and broken limbs; - Knowing what to do in the case of an accident or emergency;
- Summoning help - what people need to know, telephoning for
help, written message; and - Getting help, self-help and waiting for help to arrive, keeping
safe and warm, helping people to find you.
Certification
The participants will be provided with a Certificate of Attendance from CHMAS detailing the syllabus covered or if you prefer we can certificate the course through the British Heart Foundation - Heartstart Scheme or Rescue Emergency Care (REC) Life Saver scheme.Course Costs

AED FIRST RESPONDER
Our AED training course typically lasts for half a day and provides practical hands on skills to get with an automated external defibrillator (AED). AED's are now in place at many workplaces and leisure areas and knowing how to use one could dramatically improve the survival rate for someone who is having a cardiac arrest.
Content
The course covers the following topics:- Safety of self, bystanders and casualty;
- Vital signs conscious level, breathing, colour & temperature;
- Accident procedure & safe airway position;
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation; and
- Use of an AED.
Certification
Successful completion of the course leads to a Rescue Emergency Care (REC) AED Training certificate, which is valid for one year.Course Dates & Cost

REC BASIC
Our one day Rescue Emergency Care (REC) Basic First Aid Course will cover the practical live saving skills needed by those working in the outdoor
environment. This award is recognised by the British Canoe Union and is also suitable for the MLTUK indoor climbing and coaching awards.

We will provide you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to deal with first aid emergencies in a systematic way through instruction and hands on practical scenarios.The course covers the following topics:
- Being Safe - best practice including prevention of cross-
infection; - Vital Signs - temperature, colour, pulse, breathing, level of
consciousness; - Incident Handling - a systematic approach to problem solving
& decision making; - Unconsciousness - managing the unconscious casualty to
ensure a safe airway; - CPR & Choking - dealing with the non breathing casualty
including drowning; - Wounds & Bleeding - dealing with external & internal bleeding
and shock; and - Monitoring - Casualty Cards & monitoring plus hand over to
rescue services.
Assessment
Candidates are assessed by ongoing practical assessment by the tutor throughout the course and a short multi choice question paper.Certification
Successful completion of the course leads to a Rescue Emergency Care (REC) Level 1 Certificate in Basic First Aid, which is valid for three years. REC EMERGENCY
Our Rescue Emergency Care (REC) Emergency First Aid Course covers practical skills needed by those working in Remote, Wilderness and Mountain & Outdoor situations. It is recognised by most Outdoor National Governing Bodies Instructor Awards including Canoeing and Kayaking (BCU) and Mountaineering and Rock Climbing (MLTUK).

We will provide you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to deal with first aid emergencies in a systematic way through instruction and hands on practical scenarios. The course covers the following topics:- Being Safe - best practice including prevention of cross-

EMERGENCY FIRST AID at WORK
Our 18 hour FAW course complies with the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Approved Code of Practice L74 guidelines for qualifications of workplace First Aiders. It will also provide you with a comprehensive set of practical skills needed by first aiders in most workplaces to become a confident first aider at work.

First Aid at Work courses are externally assessed by external assessors by observation of practical skills and oral questions.Accreditation
